Scope and form:

Programme: It aims to stress the importance of the renewable resources to provide a secure basis for the future energy needs, and also, the importance of the renewable energy on European Electricity System independence. The depletion of the fossil fuels reserves, combined with projected growth in global energy demand, puts the security of energy supply at risk. Topics: The importance of exploiting renewable resources to make a strong contribution to satisfy energy needs; The importance of the renewable energy to provide opportunities for investment in new industries and new technologies; Energy consumed from renewable sources worldwide; Different forms of renewable energy; The framework for actions: Financial support for renewable energies; Unblocking barriers to delivery and developing emerging technologies; Overview of policies and measures to promote the use of energy from renewable resources (Renewables Obligation, Feed in Tariffs, Renewable Heat Incentive, Energy Crops Scheme, Zero Carbon Homes, Information campaigns); The Marked and the Green Energy
Scope and form:
The students should obtain or develop a set of skills and knowledge of the importance of renewable energies in the energy sector..


Duration (weeks; Hours/week):

15 weeks, 4 hours/week (on average 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of labs/project work)

Type of assessment:

Distributed evaluation with final exam. Work groups of 2-3 students. Practical classes based on the analysis of typical examples and development of field works

Qualified Prerequisites:

Power Systems Operation, Energy management with Renewable Energy, Energy Markets.


General module objectives:

The objectives of the module are as follows: acquisition and knowledge regarding the importance of the renewable energy in the energy sector; Demonstration of understanding the role of the renewable energy in the electricity sector; the importance of exploiting renewable resources to make a strong contribution to satisfy energy needs and the importance of renewable energy to the air quality, to the national energy independence and for the developing of emerging technologies.
